The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, 1st edn 1950 (C S Lewis - Narnia)The first of the Narnia books to be published, in 1950 by Geoffrey Bles. Clive Staples Lewis was an established writer on popular Christianity and also had a well-regarded science fiction trilogy behind him. The Narnia books were his first written for children. Lewis started to draft the first story in late September of 1939 and the manuscript was completed almost ten years later, by the end of March 1949.

Apparently The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was Lewis's working title; he asked his agent and publisher for better suggestions but was told that it was fine as it was. And, of course, it really couldn't have been better.

Lewis wrote in October 1954 "Aslan is the Turkish word for a lion:  I chose it for the sound."

Jacket illustrations by Pauline Baynes.
