|In the late 1920s Leslie Bowyer Yin became Leslie Charteris and started writing thrillers with various leading characters. The third, entitled Meet the Tiger, was published in 1928 and featured Simon Templar (alias The Saint) who met Patricia Holm in an English seaside resort and together they identified and overcame a mysterious criminal known as The Tiger. Although defective in many literary and plot-related ways, it nevertheless established The Saint as an enduring character, and Charteris discarded all the others in order to concentrate on enlarging upon Simon Templar's contribution to fighting mayhem with his own particular brand of mischief. Charteris later described this initial adventure as a poor effort and refused republication requests.
The jacket design was by Salomon van Abbé.
