Orwell, George

Animal Farm, 1st edn 1945 (George Orwell)This was first published in 1945 by Secker & Warburg. Its implicit criticism of communism was played down on initial publication, described instead as a critique of dictatorship. Publication was hindered by the British government as long as possible, and it appeared late in 1945 when the war in Europe was already over. The first printings indicate a publication date of May 1945, but actually appeared in August. A second printing was prepared within the same month and these merely changed the 'May' to 'August', thereby appearing to be from a first printing. But this was corrected within the print run to show that the book was first published and reprinted in August 1945.
