Marriott, Pat

Pat Marriott, artist and illustrator, was born in Chester on May 16, 1920. She died on September 12, 2002, aged 82.

Marriott was devoted to art almost from her birth in 1920 and she entered the St Martin's School of Art aged only 14. She continued her studies at Westminster and Chelsea where she claimed that intensive work in the life-class gave the foundation for the active character portrayals in her illustrations. Although she enjoyed painting, particularly bird studies, her illustrative work was almost all done in line, and in Charles Causley's Figgie Hobbin (1970) can be found something of an anthology of the techniques at her command, from simple line portraits, to delicate landscapes with figures, to near-abstract designs resembling etchings. In 1953 Marriott married Michael Howard, a director and, later, historian of the firm of Jonathan Cape (Joan Aiken's publisher). When he retired in 1970 through ill-health they moved to the Welsh borders with a plan to set up a retreat for writers and artists.
