This was Joan Aiken's first book, written during WWII when she was 17 and published in 1960 on both sides of the Atlantic by Abelard Schuman. The jacket shows prices in sterling and US dollars.
The uncommon 1st issue of the book had black boards with gilt titling. Later issues of the 1st printing were on tan boards with brown titling.
Jacket illustration assumed to be by Dick Hart, who illustrated the book itself.
