Chesterman, Hugh

Hugh Chesterman (20 March 1884 - 3 Nov 1941) wrote many children's books in the 1920s and 30s, and edited a children's magazine called The Merry Go Round, published in Oxford with his great friend Basil Blackwell. He was killed during the 2nd World War.
The Island of Sheep, 1st edn 1936 (John Buchan)This is the final story concerning John Buchan's most famous character, Richard Hannay. The jacket is from the 1936 1st edition published by Hodder & Stoughton, with a very simple but highly elegant illustration.

Note: Buchan wrote an earlier book with the same title published in the UK in 1919 and in the US in 1920. He refused requests for it to be reprinted, and attempted in later life to describe it as largely the work of his wife Susan. In the US the later work could not reuse the title of the 1920 work, so there it was entitled The Man From the Norlands.

Jacket illustration by Hugh Chesterman.
